WHAT,WHEN, AND WHY

WHAT IS IMPROMPTU?

The definition:  the action done without being planned , organized , or rehearsed. Impromptu speaking is speaking on the fly, without any prior preparation at all.
When giving speeches, usually we have weeks, maybe even months to prepare, but sometime, we aren't given much time after a topic is given. In these cases, we need to prepare as much as we can, speculating what questions or topics could be asked.

WHEN IS IMPROMPTU USED?

A common misconception is that impromptu is just used during tournaments and speech competitions. Another may be during formal interviews for a job, position or school.

While those are examples o where impromptu skills are indeed necessary, that's not all!

In fact, impromptu is so prevalent in our lives, everyone utilizes this skills.

For example:

If we're asked to speak during a meeting or asked questions during class presentations!

If people ask us how our day went!( As we frantically spend a second in our head organizing our thoughts before blurting out the answer)

If you're asked to give a toast at a formal occasion!(At a wedding, formal dinner, etc.)

WHY IS LEARNING IMPROMPTU IMPORTANT?

Not only because of its recurrent appearance in our everyday lives, speaking impromptu also helps us with our confidence.

Being able to floor your audience after giving a groundbreaking speech always boosts how we feel!

Not only do we feel more confident, that's how we appear as well! Impromptu speaking helps you to organize your thoughts, so even if you aren't going into actual speech tournaments, you still appear more coherent in speaking on the fly!

Learning impromptu speaking is one of the foundations of leadership, motivating team members to work together! Let's improve our speaking and leadership skills together, one step at a time!

TIPS AND TRICKS

  • Be confident -- look up, breath deeply , say to yourself something positive - 'I am the best', or 'I'm going to be fine'.
  • Focus on the audience -- Impromptu speech need to be audience centric. The audience will be on your side - focus on what will be useful to them.
  • Less is more - Avoid the tendency to ramble. An audience is far more likely to listen if you stay on target and are succinct. In fact, they'll love you for it. Keep it short and to the point.
  • Have a structure - Tell them what you are going to tell them;  then tell them;  then tell them what you just told them.
  • Talk conversationally -- image you are speaking to your best friend and let yourself be authentic and natural.

  • Be brief -- keep your case in 60 seconds or less. Don't keep talking and talking.  Summarize your content in sixty seconds or less why you are a great candidate for the job. This will help turn the conversation into what makes you a great candidate, rather than whatever you were doing. Make the "interviewer" excited about you.
  • Focus on your accomplishments -- This is true of all interviews, but it is vital at an impromptu interview.  The more you focus on your achievements, the easier it will be to imagine you as a great candidate.
  • Be mindful of body language -- Our body language is a window into how we're feeling. Project confidence and attentiveness by sitting up straight, making eye contact, and remaining as relaxed as possible. Even more importantly, avoid body language that can be interpreted negatively, such as fidgeting and crossing your arms or legs.
  • Be yourself -- People can sense insincerity, so whenever possible, it's always better to be genuine and candid.
